2020 Municipal By-Election

The next local government by-election will be held on April 4th, 2020

Qualified Electors of the City of Rossland on April 4th, 2020 will elect the following positions for the remainder of the current (4) four-year term ending in October 2022:

  • (1) Councillor

THINKING OF RUNNING FOR LOCAL OFFICE?

Serving your community can be a rewarding experience. There are many good reasons to run for office—you might run to be actively involved in the local government decision-making process, to contribute your experience and knowledge to the community, to address local issues or to lead change in your community(courtesy of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing).

In order to be eligible to run for local government office, a person must have been a resident of BC at least six months before filing their nomination documents. In addition, a person must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older on General Voting Day
  • Be a Canadian Citizen
  • Not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office; or, be otherwise disqualified by law

Elections BC sets the maximum expense limits for each municipality in Local Government Elections:

Rossland Council candidate: $5,000

3rd Party Advertisers supporting a Mayor or Council candidate: $750.00

The City of Rossland will be preparing nomination and endorsement packages for prospective candidates which will include information regarding specific background information on the City, its current structure and general operations. The nomination and endorsement packages will be ready for pick-up at City Hall on Monday, February 3rd, 2020 or you can click here. Please note, The minimum number of qualified nominators required to make a nomination for the office of Mayor or Council for the City of Rossland shall be five (5). If you are downloading the package online, please contact the Chief Elections Officer at executive.assistant@rossland.ca or by calling 778-457-5031 to ensure that the most up-to-date document is being used.

 

Key 2020 Local Government By-election Dates

  • NOMINATION PERIOD: Tuesday, February 18, 2020 – Friday, February 28, 2020
  • ADVANCED VOTING OPPORTUNITIES: Wednesday, March 25, 2020 (8am-8pm) or Wednesday, April 1, 2020 (8am-8pm) at City Hall
  • GENERAL VOTING DAY: Saturday, April 4th, 2020 at the Miners' Union Hall – 1765 Columbia
